Local Voids as the Origin of Large-angle Cosmic Microwave Background Anomalies I

چکیده
We explore the large angular scale temperature anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background due to expanding homogeneous local voids at redshift z . 1. A compensated spherically symmetric homogeneous dust-filled void with radius ∼ 3× 102h−1Mpc, and density contrast δ ∼ −0.3 can be observed as a cold spot with a temperature anisotropy ∆T/T ∼ −1× 10−5 surrounded by a slightly hotter ring. We find that a pair of these circular cold spots separated by∼ 50 can account both for the planarity of the octopole and the alignment between the quadrupole and the octopole in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy. The cold spot in the Galactic southern hemisphere which is anomalous at the ∼ 3σ level can be explained by such a large void at z ∼ 1. The observed north-south asymmetry in the large-angle CMB power can be attributed to the asymmetric distribution of these local voids between the two hemispheres. The statistical significance of the low quadrupole is further reduced in this interpretation of the large angular scale CMB anomalies. متن کاملLocal Voids as the Origin of Large-angle Cosmic Microwave Background Anomalies: The Effect of a Cosmological Constant
We explore the large angular scale temperature anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) due to homogeneous local dust-filled voids in a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe with a cosmological constant. In comparison with the equivalent dust-filled void model in the Einstein-de Sitter background, we find that the anisotropy for compensated asymptotically expanding local voids c...
متن کاملProbing the Origin of the Large-angle CMB Anomalies
It has been argued that the large-angle cosmic microwave background anisotropy has anomalies at ∼ 3σ level. We review various proposed ideas to explain the origin of the anomalies and discuss how we can constrain the proposed models using future observational data.

In this talk presented at the 5th Rencontres du Vietnam 2004, we discuss our preliminary investigations into voids of primordial origin. We show that if voids in the cold dark matter distribution existed at the epoch of decoupling, they could contribute significantly to the apparent rise in cosmic microwave background (CMB) power on small scales detected by the Cosmic Background Imager (CBI) De...
متن کاملThe Nexus between Cosmology and Elementary Particle Physics: Testing Theoretical Speculations through Observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background Anisotropies
The origin of the large scale structure in the universe — galaxies, quasars, clusters, voids, sheets — is one of the most important questions in cosmology. One can show that some non-thermal energy density fluctuations must have been present in the early universe. These fluctuations grew by gravitational instability to form the observed structures. There are at present two families of models to...
